STEP 240: Case Four: An Unusual Infection (CE: 0.5)

This article presents a case study of a 59-year-old woman with a history of more than 50 pack-years of smoking and alcohol abuse who was hospitalized several times in the previous 5 years for recurrent bronchitis and pneumonia, control of adult-onset diabetes mellitus, and various combinations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis), fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, chronic cough, dehydration, and malnutrition. During most of the year prior to this admission, she was treated with prednisone and numerous antimicrobial agents. Learners are encouraged to read through the case study to determine the cause of the patient’s infection.
