2015AM: Drug Resistance in Gram-Negative Organisms (CE: 1.0)

Description:

In this course, the presenter discusses how the world has moved into the post-antibiotic era with an increasing number of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Also discussed is how the CDC estimates two million people are infected by antibiotic resistant pathogens which have seen a steady increase in hospital and health care associated surveillance studies. Additionally, various strategies to identify new classes of antibiotics are under development while further strategies aim to repurpose existing compounds for use as antimicrobials is presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss a brief history of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, leading to current issues in antibiotic resistance.
  • Name the most common gram-negative organisms which have known antibiotic resistance and the healthcare impact of these organisms.
  • Outline key factors that have contributed to the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria.
