The Global Threat of Emerging Infectious Diseases (CE: 1.0)

Description:

Human populations have had a tangled history with infectious diseases. Early recorded accounts of disease outbreaks show that they have profoundly impacted early humans and have likely caused more deaths than wars, natural disasters, or chronic diseases combined. Disease outbreaks continue to have profound impacts on humanity, even in the 21st Century. This course examines some of the most pervasive infectious diseases of recent history and discusses the history, epidemiology, and potential future impact of diseases like Ebola, Zika, and COVID.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the history and definition of infectious disease and epidemiology
  • Identify common terminology used in epidemiology
  • Discuss the history of emerging infectious diseases
  • Describe the prevention, testing, and treatment of emerging infectious diseases
