Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
has put a major burden on public health and the economies of several countries.
HIV has confronted modem science with a formidable challenge. More than 18
million deaths can be attributed to the AIDS pandemic since its description in
1981. Although the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)
has had a considerable impact on patient survival (when and where applicable).
A cure remains elusive. This article
discusses current HIV monitoring processes and treatment practices.
