Description:
For
some time, we have known that systemic diseases can affect a patient’s oral
health and therefore, modify dental treatment.
Dental treatment can be affected either by medications used to treat a
particular medical condition or by the oral changes resulting from a particular
non- oral disease process. In this presentation, some of those medical
conditions (such as diabetes, pregnancy, arthritis, total joint prostheses,
bulimia and anorexia nervosa, blood disorders, cancer, cardiovascular and
kidney disease, epilepsy and others) which impact treatment of dental disease
will be outlined.
Learning Objectives:
- List
the most common patient medical conditions that can impact dental treatment.
- Describe
the impact of these medical conditions on dental treatment.
- Discuss
common dental conditions treated by dentists, and how and why these conditions
can be linked to underlying medical conditions.
