2011AM: Medical Errors/HIPAA (HITECH Act) (CE: 2.0)

Description:

The passage of the Health Information for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) under ARRA updated the HIPAA regulations that directly affect clinical laboratories, hospitals and clinics.  Updated privacy and security rules, new breach reporting requirements to comply with HIPPA 5010 forms, tougher penalties and increased exposure to medical errors require the development of meaningful use audits, incident reporting and better management of patient PHI.  This presentation will discuss the requirements for healthcare professionals and include incident analysis to resolve medical errors that may occur as a result of the new regulation. Some case studies will be explored using a model, incident exposure plan and meaningful use audits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define new updates to HIPAA regulations under the HITECH Act of 2009.
  • Describe how to develop and use an incident management plan for medical errors that may arise from the new regulations.
  • Outline how to conduct an accurate and thorough medical error investigation.
