Description:
This article presents a new type of STEP article. Learners
are encouraged to read a transcript of a fake courtroom trial testimony. To
follow the story line of this manuscript, the reader will need to make some
assumptions: 1) the setting is a local courtroom; 2) a medical malpractice suit
has been filed involving blood specimen collection and testing practices; 3)
the writer of this manuscript serves as the prosecuting attorney; 4) blood
collection tubes can talk and tell their own unique stories as witnesses on the
stand in this local courtroom; there is no defense attorney to counter the
prosecution; and 5) the reader will serve as the jury in the trial.
Learning Objectives:
- Reflect on a faux courtroom case outlining poor phlebotomy
practices
- Describe the order of the draw
- Discuss CLSI standards
