Description:
Hepatitis is a disease in which the
liver exhibits inflammation and diffuse or patchy necrosis primarily defined by
laboratory tests. Hepatitis can occur in acute and chronic forms. Acute
hepatitis occurs because of acute injury to the liver causing the release of
liver enzymes and bilirubin but is usually self-limiting in nature. However,
acute hepatitis can lead to liver failure and the need for a liver transplant.
Chronic hepatitis is usually clinically inapparent and is almost always
diagnosed by laboratory testing. This article discusses hepatitis in detail.
