Description:
Anemia
is a pathologic condition caused by a reduction in red blood cells and a public
health issue affecting all age groups. This presentation will define and
discuss the clinical signs and symptoms of anemia, classify anemia based on
morphology and pathophysiology, and present case studies to correlate clinical
conditions with red cell morphology.
Learning Objectives:
- Define
anemia and discuss the clinical signs and symptoms.
- Recognize
anemia in patients given complete blood count results and appropriate reference
ranges.
- Describe
the appearance of the peripheral blood smear in various anemias.
- Discuss
an algorithm for differential diagnosis of anemia incorporating the MCV,
reticulocyte count, and RDW.
- Correlate
clinical conditions associated with abnormal red cell morphology using case
studies.
